The Festival

Clear Creek 20140127 - Version 3

Premiere of “Late Wildflowers” by pianist/composer Ian Guthrie (at the piano)

The Clear Creek Music Festival, set in the rustic beauty and pristine air of Pine Valley, was founded in 2011 to provide gifted musicians ages 16 to post-college with two weeks of intensive study in voice, piano, cello, or music composition balanced by recreation in “the Alps of eastern Oregon.”   The daily schedule of instruction, practice, and rehearsal is enhanced by yoga and informal interaction with faculty and the community.

Students develop their performance skills in a stimulating, non-competitive atmosphere through daily lessons, masterclasses, chamber coaching and larger ensemble work.  This festival provides time dedicated to solo repertoire as well as exploration of new works: ideal for recital preparation.

“Loved the positive, encouraging environment and relaxed atmosphere.”

Chamber ensembles and other collaborative work ensure that friendships between colleagues are quickly formed.  Students can compose or be involved in the process of creation by giving feedback on a work in progress or by performing a world premiere.  Students may present polished works at formal concerts and perform newer repertoire in more informal settings.

“The nature that surrounds Halfway provided superior inspiration for the pieces I was learning…keep up the good work!”

On a clear day, you can see forever in the Wallowa Mountains

Between lessons, practice sessions, and rehearsals, students relax, enjoy the town and pleasant weather, and have the ability to work at their own pace.  Recreational options include hiking, a jetboat ride on the Snake River, fishing, walking the Oregon Trail, and horseback riding.  Yoga classes are included in tuition and are a wonderful way to start the morning feeling energized and fresh.

Clear Creek 20140085The Pine Valley Lodge provides a large breakfast, as well as complimentary coffee, tea, scones and hot chocolate throughout the day.  Lunches are not provided, but there are two grocery stores on the main street, as well as two cafes and a restaurant with a tasty and affordable salad bar.  Dinners are home-cooked by a local chef each evening.

“Halfway is awesome!”
